“Animal bedding provides the ideal breeding ground for fly larvae,” says Ross Goodman at Lodi UK.
“Once these areas reach around 30⁰C, which is sooner than you’d think, breeding cycles can shorten from 25-30 days to as little as six or seven, so early control is important to protect animal comfort and hygiene.”
Good fly control starts with breaking their lifecycle, he explains. “Treating bedding, muck and breeding areas with an insect growth regulator, like Larvenol or Maggots, helps reduce the number of flies reaching adulthood. The surface spray can then be used to target adult flies already active in the building.”
Ultra Dairy Fly Spray contains tetramethrin for rapid knockdown and cypermethrin for longer residual control. He recommends applying it with a knapsack or low-pressure sprayer directly on insects or walls and surfaces where flies are likely to rest. “Residual activity can last for several weeks, depending on the surface, environment and cleaning regime.”
Flies can build resistance if the same products are used repeatedly, warns Ross. “This spray gives farmers a new lower-strength option to use before increasing strength, if necessary. The formula is also free from piperonyl butoxide (PBO), making it a practical option for milking parlours and other food-sensitive areas.”
